Frequently Asked Questions

For your convenience, we’ve compiled a list of the questions we hear most frequently. We also invite you to review our student handbook for more details or for clarification on our policies. If you still have questions, give us a call—we’re happy to help!

What are South Summit Middle School’s hours?

School hours are from 7:40 a.m. until 2:16 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Friday hours are 7:40 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. The early release time on Friday is to compensate teachers for team planning and prepping.

School breakfast is at 7:00 a.m. in the cafeteria; however, the remaining school doors will not open until 7:20 a.m. each school day. We do not provide supervision for students who arrive before 7:20 a.m. or remain later than 2:30 p.m. Please schedule drop-off and pickup within these hours for the safety and well-being of your student.

Because we have students from grades five through eight, class schedules vary. Fifth grade is on a traditional elementary model schedule, while sixth, seventh, and eighth grade follow a traditional seven-period schedule.

Do you provide school meals?

SSMS provides nutritious and well-planned meals for both breakfast and lunch. Lunch costs $2.25 per meal, and breakfast is $1.25 per meal. For breakfast, students can enter the cafeteria from the outside doors beginning at 7:00 a.m.

District policy requires that families pay for meals in advance. You may pay outstanding lunch balances at the office or online. To apply for free or reduced lunch, please visit the office or complete the online form on PowerSchool. Adult lunches are $3.50.

Does South Summit Middle School have a dress code?

As the South Summit Middle School community strives to make our school “the place to be,” we all come to school dressed for academic success. Parents, we are asking for your support regarding our dress code. Proper dress positively affects our behavior and our learning, and it sets a professional tone and positive school atmosphere. See our student handbook for dress code details.

May students have cell phones and other electronic devices at school?

As a middle school teaching community, we feel that developing middle school students should not have cell phones at school because they expose students to inappropriate social media and social challenges. Nevertheless, we acknowledge that cell phones are now in common use by students of all ages. Finding a happy medium between the learning environment and socializing, we will allow our students to use their cell phones before school, during lunch, and after school. However, when the bell rings for class, students must turn cell phones off or place them in a teacher-directed location.

If students must contact a parent or guardian during class time, students may use their cell phones in the office Phone Zone or use the office phone with permission. If students are inappropriately using their phones/electronic communication devices beyond these uses, we will apply consequences as outlined in our student handbook.

How can families get involved at South Summit Middle School?

Our parents and community have chosen to have a Parent Teacher Organization represent our school. Our PTO is a crucial part of our school community. They work with the school to provide educational and fun activities for students as well as to support our teachers and staff members. We invite all parents to become active members of the PTO by joining at the beginning of the year. Please call the school for more PTO information.

In addition, the Utah state legislature mandates the formation of a school community council at every school building. Members of our site council include the school principal, six parents, and two teachers. The site council reviews building test scores and formulates a school improvement plan considering test results.

We receive a significant amount of funds from the Utah LAND Trust. The school community council allocates these funds. We elect community council members in August. If you are interested in running for a position on this council, please take your application to the school office at any time during the year. Applications are available on the district website.
